People Power Movement - Bronx, NY – A group of Bronx residents gathered on Monday, May 7th, at 3:30pm across the street from Lehman High School and marched to the 45th NYPD precinct to file a lawsuit against two police officers accused of harassment against Lehman High School student Malik Ayala.
Here is a video snapshot of the Millions Hoodies March for Travon Martin in Union Square, New York City on March 21, 2012.
The speaker is Brian Jones a Teacher, Writer and Activist we interviewed during the rally/march. He connects the killing of Trayvon Martin to Michelle Alexander's book, The New Jim Crow and the view of black and brown men as criminals. The results of this criminalization has not only led to the mass incarceration of black men but also the murder of them like what happened with Trayvon Martin.
The turnout for Trayvon Martin was huge. The voices of our youth were loud and clear "we are all Trayvon Martin." We no longer need to feel like lone voices crying in the wilderness, our youth have come, the people are awakening. Death to ignorance and inhumanity!
On Friday September 30, 2011 Occupy Wall Street protestors gathered at Zuccoti Park (Liberty Square) and marched to One Police Plaza to protest police harassment and brutality. Thousands showed up for the peaceful march which ended with a massive general assembly discussion held outside NYPD headquarters.
On September 22, 2011, CUNY law students participated in the march for Troy Davis. Green hats were worn by the law students to represent the National Lawyers Guild. At 0:04 seconds of this video, a woman representative is aggressively forearmed in the head and neck and pushed out of the frame by an NYPD officer.
